THE LLOYD SHELL HOME is located in the center of the prosperous Brushey Creek community, a short distance east of Chapman. A new paved road connects this little community with U.S. 31 on the west and the Gerrnville-Mckenzie highway on the east.

The home is 90 years and eight months old. It was completed April 21, 1861--the year and month that the War Between the States began.

Mr. M.E. Burke, who built the home, wrote on the wall the words: "This house was finished April 21, 1861." The present owner purchased it when the home was 38 years of age, and has owned it for the past 52 years. Mr. Shell states that he bought the home for what would be considered a ridiculously low price. He has made few changes in the outside appearance. There is a breezeway, or open hallway, which separates the rooms on either side if the hall. This was wainscoated up and screened in, but otherwise left open just as designed by the builder, almost a century ago.
