Notes for David Franklin Alberson

Uncle David is a free spirit in my childhood memories. He drove a big motorcycle and wore a leather jacket, cool shades, and a red bandana tied around his head. It was fascinating to hear him talk about his adventures at family gatherings, especially his tales of the river. He'd always liked boats, from the time he and his boyhood friend Mack had built rafts to sail on the gravel pits near his home in Millbrook, Alabama. He enlisted in the Navy as a young man, serving on an aircraft carrier. Following his enlistment, he continued his association with ships, working on tugs and barges on rivers and intracoastal waterways. He ultimately became a licensed pilot for a wide variety of vessels and waterways.

My mother, his sister, called tonight to tell me he was now "riding the big Harley in the sky." He passed peacefully earlier in the evening shortly after the arrival of his son, David. Our lives will be less colorful for his absence, but his freedom is unfettered... and heaven's a more interesting place.
