Notes for Samuel Hickman Shell
Sam left home at age 16 in rebellion to his father's insistence that he plow on the 4th of July.

He and his brother, George Daniel Shell, were interested in woodworking and furniture building from their youth. The family still treasures several examples of Sam's furniture as well as fine Victorian pieces from Pelham, Shell, & Leckie, the furniture company George founded after Sam's death.
Many years after his death when his son moved to the Deatsville area of Elmore County, Alabama, he learned that his father had lived there for a while before he married, employed with the local drug store.

According to his sister Sara, Sam was always looking in on and after his mother and always brought something for Sara when he visited. On the weekend of Easter in 1937 while Olean was pregnant with their child, they were visiting and Sam had brought Sara a big chocolate bunny. She remembered her brothers teasing that they'd sneak in while she was asleep and eat its ears off. Their mother Iona died that Easter morning.
After he married Olean Hybart, Sara also visited frequently at their home on Pelham Street behind the state capitol in Montgomery. She was there, as was much of the family, when he died of pneumonia, leaving a wife of just over three years and an eighteen month old son. At this age his son was, of course, too young to understand his father's absence and many of the family who were there through that sad time remember him going to the window in the evening to await his father's arrival.
