A Memorial to "Auntie"
Iona Demarius Hickman Shell was a portrait of goodness which can be copied by only the strong and the brave, a woman of enormous character and deep devotion to all mankind. She attended high school in Newton, Alabama, coming home during summer and vacations to live with her brother John W. Hickman.
The beautiful young Iona eloped at 18 with Edward Marvin Shell June 9, 1907, and was married by Justice of the Peace S.J. Searcy.
They made their home in Pigeon Creek at the family home site which she inherited from her father's estate. After her Grandpa Halso's death she inherited his home which was torn down and rebuilt into a large four bedroom home.
She was a very devout Christian woman, professed her Christian faith in early girlhood in Sardis Baptist Church, and continued a member there untl death.
She was the mother of ten children. Death came suddenly Easter Sunday morn, March 28, 1937 at age 47. She is buried in the south corner of Sardis Church Cemetery. Her husband died November 21, 1958.
