Notes for Stephen Shell
The Tax List for Bute County, North Carolina in 1771 shows him, then about 17 years old, as head of a household with two taxables, himself and a slave. He was likely entrusted with responsibility for management and cultivation of his father William Shell's land there. On January 25, 1785 William deeded him 225 acres in Warren County, North Carolina (Warren County, North Carolina Deed Book 8, p. 197).
According to Bishop Francis Asbury's Journal, recording his movements in January of 1790, he was at "Ellis's church" in Sussex County, Virginia on the 7th. By the 14th they had crossed the Roanoke River into Warren County, North Carolina where they "slept at Stephen Shell's."
In 1799 he was one of the founders of Tranquil Methodist Church in Newberry District, South Carolina and served it for many years as pastor. On Sunday, December 12, 1802, it is recorded in Asbury's journal that "I was called upon by recommendation to ordain Stephen Shell... to the office of deacon."
In 1808 Rev. Stephen Shell was among the trustees of Mt. Bethel Academy, a Methodist school planned by Bishop Asbury
