Notes for Smith Henry Griffin
Smith Henry (Griffin) was a man of many talents. Though educated in classical studies at Bowdoin College in Bowdoinham, Maine, he returned to Georgia, read law and was admitted to the bar, though never practiced.
He was a minister, planter, businessman, a Town Commissioner and one of the original directors of the first bank in Hampton, Georgia. He did have an early interest in railroads. In 1853 he was a backer of the Savannah, Griffin and North Alabama Railroad, chartered 1854, to run from Griffin to Newnan and points west. The War stopped the construction of this railroad, but it was completed several years after the war was over.

Bowdoin College in Maine has no record of his attendance there, and they should if he did. It is perhaps more likely that he attended Bowdon College in Bowdon, Georgia, which was only about thirty miles from his home. Bowdon College merged with the Seventh and Fourth District A&M Schools in 1933 to become West Georgia College in Carrollton. West Georgia College became the State University of West Georgia in 1996.
