Notes for Samuel Aaron Hickman
His birthplace in Sumter County, Georgia is based on the 1850 Census, enumerated October 21 of that year, and the assumption that they wouldn't have traveled the estimated 50 miles to Upson County by mule and wagon within the 21 days before his birth on November 11, 1850.
He came to the Sardis Community in Butler County, Alabama in the early 1860s with his father and stepmother, Joseph Maston and Sarah Antoinette Smith Hickman. Here he married Elizabeth Jane Halso, born in the Pigeon Creek area to John William and Delilah Mercer Halso, original owners of Halso Mill. According to Memorial Record of Alabama, Vol. 1, Samuel Aaron Hickman Sr. was a prosperous farmer and miller in the Pigeon Creek area.
When Elizabeth Jane died from complications with the birth of their fifth child, family history maintains that ill health and the loss of his beloved wife proved fatal and he died on December 23, 1893, three months and 16 days after her death. It has been said that he may have grieved himself to death. They left behind four children, James Maston, John William, Samuel Aaron Jr., and Iona Damaris Hickman, to be raised under the supervision of Grandpa Halso and a housekeeper affectionately known as Aunt Jane Jernigan.
