Notes for Johnnie K. Whittington
Johnnie K. Whittington served with 10th Mountain Division in Italy during
WWII. They landed at Angio beach head (Naples, according to SKW) Bob Dole (1996 Republican US Presidential nominee) was his platoon commander and standing within yards when Dole was hit in the arm by shrapnel, an injury from which his arm remained partially paralyzed. According to Johnnie Whittington, the shell struck a tree near them and exploded. A photograph of Johnnie Whittington in uniform was taken in 1943, the year of his marriage to Sara Katherine Shell, while he was home on furlough.
