Notes for Thomas Shell
One of (Cornelius Shell's) nephews, Thomas Shell, known as "Big Tom", was a doctor and a very prominent citizen of Newberry Co.. It seems the he was famous as a doctor and also a bon vivant. He studied medicine by reading a book on that subject, learning all the latest methods of poulticing, physicking, and blood letting, and then followed an older doctor on his calls for two or three years before setting out for himself in 1810. About this time he married in Newberry County, Precious Schoppert, a native of Pennsylvania. In 1816 he decided to improve his medical knowledge by attending a series of medical lectures in Philadelphia, and he traveled to that city accompanied, of course by Precious. He lived and died in Newberry County, but many of the other Shells moved elsewhere, principally to new lands in Georgia.
