Notes for Aaron C. Hickman
Aaron C. Hickman served 2 months and 24 days in the War of 1812, Illinois Militia, as a substitute for Jim Gard. He started his service on March 26, 1813 and it ended June 18, 1813. The pension records show him on the Muster Roll of Captain Lewis Barker's Company of Infantry call into service to guard the frontiers and repel invasion of hostile Indians. He also worked at building forts on the Little Wabash River. He states that he was honorably discharged at one of the forts built by his company on the Little Wabash or at a place on the Ohio River called Shawnetown. For this service to his Country he received $8.00 dollars a month for a total of $22.34.
For his service, he received land under 3 Warrants. Warrant No. 48380 granted him 40 acres of land in Alabama, NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Section 2, Township 21, Range 21, East in the district of Montgomery. When his estate was settled in 1880 the lands he owned were: Matthews Island in the Flint River containing 25 1/4 acres; lot number 113, except for 5 acres more or less off of the North West Corner; and the South portion of fraction number 112 containing in all 275 acres more or less. The other 2 Warrants were Warrant No. 17201, in which he received 120 acres, and Warrant No. 37529, in which he received 80.
Aaron C. Hickman was described as being 5' 7" tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes, black hair and about 150 lbs. After discharge, he lived first in Jasper County, Georgia, then in Monroe County, finally settling in Upson County, where he lived in the town of Thomaston until his death.
He married Delilah Duke on 26 December 1819 in Jasper County. Neither had been previously married, according to Delilah when she applied for a widow's pension. They had several children, but the names of all were not provided in the pension file. Aaron died on 25 September 1863 in Upson County, Georgia. His place of burial was not given.
In 1889 Delilah said she was 80 years old as she applied for a widow's pension. She died on 29 February 1880 not leaving enough money to pay for her burial, as stated by the pension papers filed by the children after Delilah's death. She apparently didn't live long enough to get the pension so it was abandoned by the pension bureau. The name of only one child of Aaron and Delilah was given in the Pension File, that of Aaron C. Hickman, Jr., who lived in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia.

Aaron and Delilah Hickman had 13 children: 9 boys and 4 girls. They lived most of their married life in Thomaston Georgia. They were hard shell Baptist, belonging to Good Hope Primitive Baptist and Fellowship Baptist.
The 1830 Census of Upson County, Georgia reveals Aaron was 40-50 years old, there were seven people in his household, consisting of a female 20-30, one male 15-20(?), one male 5-10, and three males 5 years and under. We can estimate using the later 1850 Census that in 1830 Aaron would be 44, Delilah 30, John Thomas is 11(?), Joseph Maston is 5, James Maston is 3, Andrew Jackson is 1, and Stephen D. is 6 1/2 months. They lost one child, Artilissa, 3 years old, in 1826.
I believe Aaron C. settled in what is now known as Upson County around 1820. Mr. D.B. Dickens with the Upson County Historical Society said they settled in what is known as Hickman's fork. Mrs. Hazel Y. Lewis of Cullman, Alabama (from the line of one of Aaron's twin girls, Sarah Elizabeth Hickman) said it was Hickman Holler located near Crest, Georgia. Hickman Fork is on the map.
It was previously stated by Aunt Katie Hickman Kersh (1869-1964) in the 1965 Hickman-Halso book that Delilah was 18 when she ran off with Aaron C. who was 40 years old. They may have run off in 1819, but based on my research, Aaron was 34, not 40, and if they did run off all was forgiven by 1845 when Delilah's father, Stephen Duke, filed his will. The will was recorded March 4, 1845 in Book A, page 65 in Upson County, Georgia, dividing his property into 5 equal parts. He named Delilah and her children, along with 3 other children to share and share alike. A notation in the old family Bible of his son, Moses S. Duke reads "at his residence, Upson County, Georgia, departed this life Stephen Duke, Oct 1844, age 78 years. As a husband, parent and master, he was kind, indulgent, gentle and affectionate. As a citizen, he was amiable and exemplary. In all the private walks of life much loved and much esteemed by all who knew him. His spirit has taken its flight. Blessed are those who die in the Lord.
