Notes for John Hickman
John Hickman lived in Duplin, Anson, and Rowan Counties in North Carolina, then Chesterfield and Greenville County in South Carolina, and Monroe County, Georgia. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and served seventeen months as a Minute Man from North Carolina. He lived in Anson County, North Carolina at the close of the war, then moved to Chesterfield County, South Carolina and made one crop. He then returned to Anson County, North Carolina and made three crops before moving back to Chesterfield County, South Carolina and staying for 10 or 12 years. At that time (c. 1797), he moved to Greenville County, South Carolina, lived there until 1826, and ultimately moved on to Monroe County, Georgia.
A will for John was filed (Will Book. A, p. 272) 28 September 1835 and probated 14 October 1835. A letter dated August 7, 1856 by Lewis G. Hickman, that I located in John's RS files, states that they were unable to find a marriage record of John Hickman and Elizabeth Copeland, but he had learned lately that they were married in the lower part of Anson County on Black River near the place called Beaver Dam in North Carolina. Apparently, Beaver Dam is now called Marshville, Union County, North Carolina, just across the Anson County line. Union County was once part of Anson County.
