Notes for Alexander Mercer
Uncle Zander lived in Luling, Texas. I can remember him visiting Grandpa Halso. Grandpa brought him over to see us (J.W. Hickman family) in his horse and buggy. I remember he and grandpa talking of their experiences in the Confederate War. One thing that stayed with me was: It seemed the Confederate soldiers didn't have much food and they said their Co. would come to a camping place abandoned by Yankees, they would find a lot of bread thrown out, and covered in mold. They said they were so hungry they picked up every piece and ate it, scraping off very little of the mold. Uncle Zander died while on a visit to his sister Elizabeth Cook (Mercer) Wilkerson at the age 82 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
