Notes for Stephen D. Hickman
He served in Co. B and I of the 46th Alabama Infantry as a Private and Corporal. One record for Stephen D. Hickman, born 16 April 1831, Upson County shows he enlisted on September 2, 1862 at Loachapoka Alabama, was captured at Nashville, Tennessee and carried to Camp Chase, Ohio and remained there until the close of the war. He was parolled at Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863. The regimental records show that an exchange of prisoners was made about that time at Vicksburg. They also show that he was transferred to Capt Cross's Company on August 19, 1862 and received a payroll dated the October 3, 1862. On his application for the relief under Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Act he states he was on record of Company B, 46th Regiment in April 1862 and honorably discharged on the 6 day of June 1865. He also states that on the 14 May 1864 at Resaca Georgia he was wounded by a mini ball in the left hip. When he made his application for his pension he had 100 acres of land, 1 log house, 1 pony, 1 cow and calf, 7 hogs, 1 clock, 1 buggy, and household and kitchen furniture and farming tools valued at $12.50. On March 21, 1913, he was placed on the Pension Roll at age 80.

The 46th Alabama Infantry Regiment, organized at Loachapoka, Alabama in May, 1862, contained men from Randolph, Pike, Blount, Coosa, Macon, Montgomery, and Henry counties. Sent to East Tennessee,
it sustained several casualties in the fight at Tazewell. After serving in the Kentucky Campaign, the unit was assigned to General Tracey's Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. A number of men were disabled at Port Gibson and about half were captured at Champion's Hill, including all its field officers. The remaining men were captured at Vicksburg on July 4, 1863. Exchanged and reorganized, the 46th was attached to General Pettus' Brigade and continued the fight with the Army of Tennessee. It was active at Chattanooga and Atlanta, moved with Hood to Tennessee, and saw action at Kinston and Bentonville. The regiment lost 15 killed and 45 wounded at Vicksburg and 1 killed and 14 wounded at Chattanooga. It totalled 367 men and 266 arms in December, 1863, and 174 present in January, 1865, and surrendered with no more than 75 in April. Colonel W.L. Woods, Lieutenant Colonel Osceola Kyle and Majors George E. Brewer and J.M. Handley were in Command.
