Notes for Samuel Aaron Hickman
Papa Hickman was a farmer and owned a country store in the early years. The last time I saw him alive was about one o'clock on New Years day 1962. He had walked over to our house that afternoon and came in while we were watching the football games. He stayed only a short time, saying he didn't feel good and he was going back across the hill to lay down awhile. He died that night in Stabler's Hospital in Greenville, Alabama.
Samuel Aaron Hickman Jr. was born in the Pigeon Creek area of Butler County and lived out his life in the community of Central, near Greenville, Alabama, about 8 miles from where he was born. He was a successful farmer. In the 1920s he owned a ninety acre farm and was part owner of a country store. He was a kind and understanding man, active in his church and in all things pertaining to the development of his community and county. He sold part of his farm to the County for the school at Central. He was a strong believer in the right to vote and ensured that all of his family registered when they came of age. He was a dominant figure in the political life of his community and of Butler County.
