Notes for Joe Lee Hickman

Joe, from all reports was an "A" student at both Central School and Greenville High. He skipped the 3rd grade because of his advancement. He graduated from Greenville High School in 1953, where he was member of the Latin Club and Senior National Honor Society. He attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee from 1953 to 1955, where he majored in chemistry and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a cadet in the ROTC. He went to Vanderbilt to become a doctor, for Daddy, but quit when Daddy pasted away in November 1954. He joined the Army in 1955 and was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training and indoctrination. After basic training he went to Linguist School in Monterey, California and studied Hungarian. The last two years of his service from 1957 to 1959 was spent in Germany. Upon his release from the army in 1959, he resumed his studies at Auburn University and graduated in 1961 with a BA degree in Accounting. He again obtained his "A" student status making the dean's list each year. While he was at Auburn he met Sandra Hampton, a coed, and they were married April 30, 1960. After Graduation, he went to work in the Textile Industry working until his retirement in 1993.
