Notes for Rufus Harmon Shell
Rufus Harmon Shell enlisted with Company D of the 19th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, also known as the Army of the Tennessee's "Senoia Infantry". He was appointed 1st Corporal on June 11, 1861 and transferred to Company D, 53rd Regiment on May 6, 1862. Appointed 4th Corporal on June 10, 1864. He was wounded in the same year. With the Georgia 19th he fought at Yorktown on April 5, 1862 and at Seven Pines (Fair Oaks) on May 31, 1862. With the 53rd he fought in the Seven Days Battle from June 25 to July 1, 1862, Antietam (Sharpsburg) on September 17, 1862, Fredricksburg on December 31, 1862, Chancellorsville on May 1, 1863, Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, Fort Sanders on November 29, 1863, The Wilderness on May 5, 1864, Spotsylvania on May 7, 1864, and Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864. He is recorded absent without leave in February of 1865 with no further record.

He was present at the Appomattox Courthouse surrender of General Robert E. Lee in April of 1865.
