She was my great grandmother and I never knew her name while she was alive. We all called her "Grandmonnie" because she was the mother of the grandmother we called "Monnie" (see notes for Hattie Olean Hybart). We visited her at least annually on the occasion of the Hickman Reunion at Sardis Baptist Church in Pigeon Creek, Alabama. By the time I was a child, she was the only "family" we had who still lived in the area our families had settled in the decades before the Civil War.
They were all fascinating visits. We sat around on the front porch and listened to her stories, punctuated by spits of snuff and accompanied by the ostinato of the creaky porch swing, or played in the swept sand front yard among the spreading roots and shade of a giant oak. She raised her own chickens and drew water from a well on the back porch well into my youth and long after greater convenience was easily available, seeming to relish a few reminders of old rural ways in the deep south.
