Notes for Jackson Eugene Shell
September, 1999.
Born at Grandview Medical Center in the Sequatchie Valley near Jasper, Tennessee. We left for the hospital at about 3:00 AM and drove down the valley illuminated by a beautiful full moon trailed by the lights of Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Orion was looming over the eastern ridge. Cindy wanted me to stop looking at the sky and drive faster.
The attending physician was Dr. Rena Azar. The nurse was Fran Hardin. Cindy was pretty uncomfortable by 8:00, but they wanted her to endure some pain to progress the labor. Mike the anesthesiologist introduced an epidural block at 10:03 AM. She was much nicer after that.
After a minor eternity of pushing, breathing, sweating, and screaming, Jackson slid headfirst into the world at 1:28 PM CDT weighing 8 pounds and .6 ounces. I cut the umbilical cord and we all cried. Words fail the description of anything else.
March 2001.
Jackson is 18 months old, walking, talking, and getting into everything. He begins each day by reciting his vocabulary. I think his first word was "clock" and he is still fascinated by them. We are definitely fascinated by him. He talks a lot, often repeating the last word of every sentence he hears. He likes to sit on Paw-Paw Graham's lawnmower and in my van and "drive", and insists on the latter upon returning home from Granny Graham's every day. We are blessed. Life is better because he's here.
