Notes for Eli Lofton
Mother (Ella Mae Gladin Gilmer) told a story her mother (Laura Octavia Evans Gladin) had told her about Grandad Eli. He was building a store near Atlanta and when it was nearly finished, he returned to their former home to withdraw his money from the bank to pay the workmen and have extra funds to start the business. He never returned. They felt that some of the workmen probably way-laid him and killed him for the money.

Eli Lofton, according to research by my great aunt Susie McCurdy, was a lawyer. The family was planning to move to Tennessee and Eli was going ahead of the family to make preparations. Eli's carriage and horse were found by a river and he was never heard from again. Speculation was that he was robbed and murdered. He disappeared sometime between 1834 and 1836.
