Notes for Kemper Talmage Glasgow
Kemper T. Glasgow, Sr. was a farmer, a saw mill owner and operator, and co-owned a cotton gin in Hodges, Alabama in 1914 - 1918. He also operated a cotton gin in Belgreen, Alabama, bought and sold furs, and was a paper wood buyer for Hiwassee Land Co., in Russellville, Alabama for several years. He was a member of the Mountain Home Presbyterian Church, Glasgow Corner, Belgreen, Alabama. He and his wife Lela taught school at Hurricane, a Junior High School near Vina, Alabama.
Kemper enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially coon hunting. He would get out the carbide lights and
the stench of carbide permeated the air as he filled the lights with powder. The ten or twelve hounds that were always laying around would become restless for they knew that a hunt would soon be on. As the mule was hitched and the impatient baying hounds gathered round, a night of coon hunting would begin.
No one came to Kemper and Lela's house unanounced. The baying of the hounds, each with its own unique tone, ushered anyone who came to the door. At times the hounds bayed late in the night and Kemper could be heard yelling for them to 'shut up!'.
There was no air conditioner at Kemper and Lela's house until later in life. The front door was never
locked and in the summertime the screen door was all that barred anything from entering the house
except the cool night air.
