A notation in the old family Bible of his son, Moses S. Duke reads, "At his residence, Upson County, Georgia, departed this life Stephen Duke, Oct 1844, age 78 years. As a husband, parent and master, he was kind, indulgent, gentle and affectionate. As a citizen, he was amiable and exemplary. In all the private walks of life much loved and much esteemed by all who knew him. His spirit has taken its flight. Blessed are those who die in the Lord. M.S.D."
