Notes for Virgil David Shell
I think Virgil and Mallie were an unusual couple. They were in the construction business together (unusual for a woman back then) and she was several years older than he was. I visited them in Lubbock many times. They designed their house and it included a hidden liquor cabinet in the back of a guest room closet, well stocked! They were very active in their Lubbock church but apparently kept that little "vice" a secret.
Mallie had a serious stroke in 1970. I was a freshman at Texas Tech that year and could walk to the hospital to see her. Virgil cared for her at home for a few years. She couldn't get out of bed or speak more than a word or two. He passed away before she did, and then my mother brought Mallie to Midland and took care of her until her death. They are both buried in Lubbock. It was a sad ending to what seemed to us to be a real love match.

iv. Leonard Oscar SHELL1 was born in 1908 in Owensville, Saline County, Arkansas. He died in 1955 in Gulf of California, Mexico.
