Notes for John Mercer Pickett
Jack Pickett apparently led a troubled life. Red River Parish Court Minutes show State of Louisiana vs. Jack Pickett, Gilbert Cone and Madison Cone 6 September 1873 (pp 107 & 134). These may have been his brothers-in-law. In August 1874 Gilbert Cone was a deputy sheriff and was one of those jailed after the so-called Coushatta Riot.
Another lawsuit was because of money owed to W.E. Newman by Jack, his brother Hosea and Hosea's brother-in-law, Green Tippit. Jack is known to have been in Red River Parish in November 1873.
He was married 2nd in De Soto Parish 24 July 1874 to Mary Prudence "Molly" Phillips, who was born 19 December 1852 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana and died 5 January 1931 Dallas County, Texas.
Family legend tells that Jack moved to Texas, spent most of his life there and was somewhat of an outlaw. Descendents of the children by his second wife say he deserted her and the children. Their birth records indicate Jack lived in Webster Parish, Louisiana 1875-1882, at least part time.
It is told he came briefly to Red River Parish once in later years but left in a hurry, being hunted by the law. He may have been an influence on his brother Hosea's son, Mitchell, who encountered trouble in Texas.
Jack was married a third time in 1889, to Lydia Coat, and lived in Beeville, Texas for a while. He was blind when he died 11 October 1939 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 87.
