On 14 June 1962 he enlisted as a private in Company A of the 5th North Carolina Cavalry. Records show he was 22 years old, 5 feet 5 inches in height, and by occupation a soldier. He was mustered in on 19 June with his cousin, William M. Hybart (161). He appears to have served at least through the end of 1864 and no records have been found of this company for 1865.
