After the death of his mother, he enlisted in the U. S. Army during the Spanish American War and was sent to the Philippines as part of the forces to suppress the rebellion. Having concealed his true age from the recruiting officer, he became one of the youngest veterans of the Spanish American War. He served as a pastor to Baptist churches in Alabama and Florida until shortly before his death.
